Marlene Barry — Mon, 15 Jun 2020 21:40:12 +0000

SECTION I: GENERAL INFORMATION

Since 1981 the Sooke Region Museum has hosted the region’s official Visitor Centre, part of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture & Arts Visitor Centre network. We serve visitors from around the world with inquiries in person, by mail, email and phone.

Sooke to Port Renfrew is a premier tourism region of Vancouver Island conveniently located near the province’s capital city, Victoria. Each year thousands of visitors come to enjoy recreational opportunities from year-round salt and freshwater fishing, cycling, scuba-diving, windsurfing, kayaking and whale watching to name just a few. We are the gateway to old-growth forests and hiking is a common past-time for people of all abilities. As the Province’s oldest independent settlement, this historic town attracts residents who have developed an excellent arts and crafts community with theatre productions, music, galleries, festivals and the well-known Sooke Fine Arts Show

Rural Observer (Juan de Fuca Rural Publications Society)

Marlene Barry — Sat, 13 Jan 2018 20:46:40 +0000

SECTION I: GENERAL INFORMATION

A group of Juan de Fuca residents has formed a non-profit society to launch a news and advertising publication for the Juan de Fuca Electoral Area to provide a forum for our rural communities to share news, exchange ideas and develop a sense of community. The publication will give businesses within and outside the electoral area an opportunity to promote their products and services and reach potential customers. We hope to provide current information about the region and its services for the many tourists who visit the area. Our goal is to protect, preserve and enhance rural life. The publication will rely on community members to share their interests and points of view through articles, correspondence and photographs. We welcome articles and letters reflecting the diverse interests of our member communities and expressing all points of view. The editorial committee reserves the right to edit for brevity, accuracy, clarity and taste. Though every reasonable precaution will be made to verify the accuracy of material submitted, the editorial committee assumes no responsibility for the content of published articles. The responsibility is that of the writers. References and descriptions of products or services are provided “as is” without warranty of any kind, either expressed or implied. Submit your articles, pictures or comments to the Rural Observer.

Please support this important project. We invite you to volunteer and/or become a member of the society, which is open to all residents of the Juan de Fuca Electoral Area interested in an effective publication to serve our area. Send your name and contact information, along with $20 per person per year, to: 2617 Seaside Drive, Shirley, BC V9Z 1G7.

Juan de Fuca Forest Watch

JdF Forest Watch — Mon, 11 Apr 2016 22:40:02 +0000

SECTION I: GENERAL INFORMATION

As Juan de Fuca regional residents we share this in common:
We are gravely troubled by the staggering rate and volume of deforestation in our region. We believe that our forests are being grossly mismanaged, and that these lands which should represent our commons have been unjustly expropriated in the name of fast profit for industry shareholders, at the expense of ecological sustainability and what is literally the birthright ground for future generations.
Our vision is two-fold:

1. An outright moratorium on old-growth logging and 2. A consistent practice of sustainable forestry accountable to elected, regional representatives that fosters increased related employment.

To achieve these visions we will grow an active community of participation dedicated to reclaiming the intrinsic value of our forests.

In so doing we might also redirect our attitudes and imaginations to a more just and viable economy.

Sooke Region Volunteer Centre

Marlene Barry — Thu, 07 Nov 2013 05:52:46 +0000

SECTION I: GENERAL INFORMATION

The Sooke Region Volunteer Centre was founded to promote and support volunteerism in the Sooke Region, and to build a community where everyone volunteers.

We:

promote volunteerism,
build capacity for effective local volunteering,
provide leadership on issues relating to volunteerism, and
connect people with opportunities to serve.

We meet monthly and have office hours Tuesday and Thursday from 1:00 – 3:00 PM # 204 2120 Church Road, Sooke, B.C. V9Z 0W7. We can also be contacted through coordinator@sookeregionvolunteers.org or by calling 778-365-1878

At the Sooke Region Volunteer Centre, we are building relationships and collaborations as well as listening to the community so our work provides broad, long term benefits. The two annual Volunteer Fairs we hosted are successful examples of the benefits of bringing non-profit representatives together to showcase their efforts to the public. They are also an opportunity to showcase these organizations and connect individual passions with the community needs.

One of our goals is to create a sustainable social enterprise, an organization that earns its own funds to cover its administration costs and possibly more. We know from consultation with experts in the field of ‘social enterprise’ that it takes 5-7 years for a social enterprise business to begin to make a profit. We’ve been advised to seek grants and donations to get the Volunteer Centre established, and then to develop a social enterprise that aligns with the work of the organization. We welcome your participation.

We have a mailing list of more than 370 individuals and supporters who follow our progress, and we look forward to collaborating with many of the 180+ non-profit clubs, organizations and charities in the region.

Times certainly have changed and volunteering is changing along with it. Gone are the days when people signed up for a 20 or more year stint with one organization. Economics and the Baby Boomer generation factor into these changes along with organized sports, and volunteering to earn credits or beef-up your resume. With a seemingly large number of organizations in our region comes the challenge of filling boards of directors or steering committees, not to mention all the other aspects of ‘doing what they do’. Mind you, some of these are social clubs like bridge or cribbage clubs where most of the work is in the play. Whether they are setting up the tables or making the tea and cookies their members are still volunteers.

The current trend toward project-based, time-limited volunteer opportunities puts a new emphasis on resources and skill development for volunteers. While the average number of hours contributed continues to shrink, the number of volunteers is growing, and with the number of non-profits in our region, it makes sense to set up or bring training here, thereby making it more accessible and more affordable.

Volunteering is more than people ‘helping out’, it is an expression of citizenship and community support. We invite you to join us.
