We are gravely troubled by the staggering rate and volume of deforestation in our region. We believe that our forests are being grossly mismanaged, and that these lands which should represent our commons have been unjustly expropriated in the name of fast profit for industry shareholders, at the expense of ecological sustainability and what is literally the birthright ground for future generations.
Our vision is two-fold:

1. An outright moratorium on old-growth logging and 2. A consistent practice of sustainable forestry accountable to elected, regional representatives that fosters increased related employment.

To achieve these visions we will grow an active community of participation dedicated to reclaiming the intrinsic value of our forests.

In so doing we might also redirect our attitudes and imaginations to a more just and viable economy.

Our primary goal is to develop self-confidence and discipline, while teaching self defence techniques that will enable our students to protect themselves in dangerous situations and to deal with life's more unpleasant moments. Along with the student's physical fitness and mastering of techniques, there should also be mental and emotional growth and development. We do not promote aggressive behaviour, and such conduct is not tolerated.

If you are a parent of a student, we welcome your input and involvement, as the Martial Arts is not only a sport, but also a way of life, and thus involves all family members.

Our community development work is aimed at enhancing, coordinating and creating literacy programs in the Sooke Region, from East Sooke to Port Renfrew, making sure that everyone has access to the learning opportunities they need to fulfill their full potential.

So what do we actually do? Sometimes our literacy work provides financial assistance to an existing community program so they can offer childcare, ensuring that parents can participate in a program that has literacy-enhancing components. Our work may involve supporting literacy programs by helping them buy books and materials. Other times, we talk to people offering community programs to help them add a literacy component to what they already do.

We also do research in our community to determine what programs we need to create or bring in in order to make sure the needs of all our citizens are met.

Part of the world-wide Transition Network, TS is one of nearly 1,0000 Transition initiatives globally and more than 80 in Canada (including Victoria, Vancouver, the Alberni, Cowichan and Comox valleys, Powell River, and Salt Spring Island).

Sooke already has a wonderfully strong community spirit. As a new organization, we're keen to launch projects and work alongside other local organizations for common purposes. We're positioned to explore the creative possibilities of local action to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels, increase local food security, lobby for initiatives at the municipal level and, in general, develop simpler, happier, more sustainable lifestyles rooted in this remarkable community.

We are run entirely by a core team of volunteers and governed by the Society Act of British Columbia. A life membership is automatically extended to anyone who signs up for our email list by sending a request to sooketransition@gmail.com. Membership carries no cost nor obligations, and can be cancelled at any time by request. A monthly TS newsletter along with email reminders about upcoming events of interest to the Transition-minded are sent periodically. Your address will never be shared. Transition Sooke had approx. 240 members as of January, 2015.

In 2014 CHI merged with the Sooke Cooperative Association of Service Agencies (CASA). The Sooke Region Communities Health Network (SRCHN) has many individual participants who volunteer their time and have effectively had a beneficial impact across dimensions of health and social care in our region. Members, who elect the Board of Directors, include local residents, family doctor, social service agencies, VIHA representative and other relevant regional agencies. We already have a superb track record of effective achievements serving the community, such as, the development of Sooke Youth Council, formation of Sooke Region Volunteer Centre, publication of a community needs assessment and a guide to free or low-cost counseling services, meals, medical equipment and clothing available in the area from Beecher Bay to Port Renfrew. SRCHN has had a far-reaching impact on public awareness of health-related community matters.

We are interested in attracting members from the local regional community who share our vision and values. Members will benefit from participating in local community developments and contributing to plans and community resources. Members also elect the Board of Directors who are responsible for the governance of for their abilities and experiences and are able to contribute to the strategic direction of this important local co-operative. Members are not expected to have an in depth understanding of our history or operations, but you should be able to use your knowledge and experience to guide you and other Members as we develop our strategic direction and strive to increase our capacity.

Current SRCHN projects and initiatives:

Community liaison with Island Health's Integrated Health Network

Sooke Region Volunteer Centre

Representation on the Primary Health Care Services Working Group (PHCSWG), Partners for Better Health and the Child & Youth Mental Health Initiative

South Island Division of Family Practice - Partners For Better Health Committee

The agenda for these meetings include; updates related to the Sooke Integrated Health Network, reports of committees including the community garden and volunteer centre, partnerships and funding opportunities, liaison with the District of Sooke and any other relevant items. We may also have guests presenting information pertinent to our objectives. The main role of a Member is to exercise your best judgment, based on your knowledge, skills and abilities. Be respectful of the opinions of others and be prepared. Follow the guiding principles: Is this the right thing to do? Is it fair? How are we benefiting the community? By working together, and with your help, we will continue our successful work enhancing the wellness and health of Sooke region community.
