No way would the Sooke Region Museum be able to accomplish so much without the hundreds of volunteers who continue to lend a hand in such a variety of ways.

Whether it’s helping to staff the museum’s Gift Shop, the school program, helping organize special events, Open House, Snowman Building contests, serving at salmon barbecues, contributing musical performances, building exhibits, working at special fund-raising events, research projects, weeding the gardens, selling raffle tickets, cleaning the lens, proofreading, stuffing envelopes, and much more, volunteers have a great time working together. Typically, Volunteers, Staff and Board members all get together to celebrate a sense of accomplishment and camaraderie with a potluck party in late August.

The volunteer work of today follows on the heels of the incredible dedication of the Sooke Lions Club and the Sooke Community Association in getting the museum established in the first place. Back in the mid-1970s it was the wonderful spirit and hard work of the Sooke Lions that initated the project, and it was the generosity and community spirit of the volunteers of Sooke Community Association that provided the property where it could be built. It is because of these groups and many others that have joined in to support the Sooke Region Historical Society, that the museum has become a cornerstone of community life.

To volunteer at SEAPARC Leisure Complex, follow these four steps:

1. Complete a Volunteer Application Form - available for pick up at the reception

2. Meet with Program Supervisor- you will be contacted to schedule a meeting with the appropriate Program Supervisor. They will discuss your suitability, availability and interest in volunteering. References may be contacted.

3. Complete a Police Information Check - This is free for volunteers

4. Attend a Volunteer Orientation - After successfully completing the references and Police Information Check, you will receive an invitation to attend an orientation session. At the session, you will learn about volunteer roles and expectations

Sooke ESS, working with Sooke Fire/Rescue, are a local volunteer who trains and works to give back to their community when natural disasters like fires, earthquakes, floods ad other events occur, that cause families to be evacuated from their homes

Emergency Support Services, a provincial emergency response program, provides those services required to preserve the well-being of people affected by an emergency or disaster.

ESS Volunteers are trained to set up reception centres, register evacuees, and provide referrals to local businesses as required.

Please contribute your skills to this worthwhile charitable project! HPS provides musical instruments and instruction to kids and youth in the Sooke area. This includes a Strings program (violin, viola, and cello) for students in grades two and up, and a Drumline program (marching band-style drumming) for students in grades six and up. Students perform at community events throughout the year. Work as a team with a friendly board and dedicated teachers to provide this life-enriching musical experience to our youth. (No musical skills are required of the Treasurer!)

Responsibilities include:

Attend Board meetings once a month.

Maintain Society accounts (record revenue and expenses, issue checks).

Prepare financial reports for board meetings.

Develop an annual budget for the Society.

Monitor funds to ensure they are adequate to cover operational needs.
