Sooke Region Museum & Visitor Centre

Marlene Barry — Mon, 15 Jun 2020 21:40:12 +0000

SECTION I: GENERAL INFORMATION

Since 1981 the Sooke Region Museum has hosted the region’s official Visitor Centre, part of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture & Arts Visitor Centre network. We serve visitors from around the world with inquiries in person, by mail, email and phone.

Sooke to Port Renfrew is a premier tourism region of Vancouver Island conveniently located near the province’s capital city, Victoria. Each year thousands of visitors come to enjoy recreational opportunities from year-round salt and freshwater fishing, cycling, scuba-diving, windsurfing, kayaking and whale watching to name just a few. We are the gateway to old-growth forests and hiking is a common past-time for people of all abilities. As the Province’s oldest independent settlement, this historic town attracts residents who have developed an excellent arts and crafts community with theatre productions, music, galleries, festivals and the well-known Sooke Fine Arts Show

Glen's Gardening Company

Marlene Barry — Sat, 13 Jan 2018 20:05:15 +0000

SECTION I: GENERAL INFORMATION

Glen Thelin, owner of Glen's Gardening Company, is now offering professional gardening expertise to residents of Sooke. He specializes in year round care of mature, established landscapes where in-depth plan knowledge, fine attention to detail and seasoned gardening expertise are essential. From garden consultation and design to year round professional care, Glen provides the skill and knowledge for those who love their gardens.

Glen is a Journeyman Horticulturist with over 20 years experience as a private gardener and as head gardener for the City of Chilliwack. He was instrumental in the design and maintenance of many city parks and public spaces. Glen's home garden was featured in Garden's West Magazine in December 2006.

Glen has also been an active volunteer in the gardening community; establishing an annual fundraising Garden Show for a heritage park, leading several elementary school garden and tree planting projects, and assisting the Chilliwack Rotary Club with its annual Garden Tour by collaborating with Brian Minter in selecting suitable properties (many of which were Glen's private gardening clients).

Glen's Gardening Company is now accepting new clients for the upcoming gardening season.

Juan de Fuca Forest Watch

JdF Forest Watch — Mon, 11 Apr 2016 22:40:02 +0000

SECTION I: GENERAL INFORMATION

As Juan de Fuca regional residents we share this in common:
We are gravely troubled by the staggering rate and volume of deforestation in our region. We believe that our forests are being grossly mismanaged, and that these lands which should represent our commons have been unjustly expropriated in the name of fast profit for industry shareholders, at the expense of ecological sustainability and what is literally the birthright ground for future generations.
Our vision is two-fold:

1. An outright moratorium on old-growth logging and 2. A consistent practice of sustainable forestry accountable to elected, regional representatives that fosters increased related employment.

To achieve these visions we will grow an active community of participation dedicated to reclaiming the intrinsic value of our forests.

In so doing we might also redirect our attitudes and imaginations to a more just and viable economy.
