About Us and our current programs

Sooke Region Volunteer Centre helps connect people with volunteer opportunities in the Sooke Region. We believe that volunteering is a pillar in everyone's life. Our mission is to inspire people to volunteer. Our office is also a home of the Sooke Region Better at Home Program. We provide a range of non-medical services in the Sooke Region. Services provided by us include:

- Companion (virtual visits )

- Hot meals delivery (during the pandemic time)

- Transportation

- Light housekeeping

- Minor home repairs

- Light yard work

- Grocery shopping

Those services are for older adults 65+ who would like to continue to play an active part in our communities, but they need some support to maintain their independence and stay connected with our community. For more information please visit the website below.

We also offer a Community Free Tax available for those of you who did not have a chance to do it yet. Please bring all your tax slips and ID and we will be happy to file your taxes. This is the drop-off.

This FREE Income Tax Program is available to individuals, youth, seniors and persons with disabilities with a SIMPLE tax situation and a MODEST income, as shown:
Family Size Total Family Income
One person: $35,000
Two persons: $45,000
Three persons: $47,500
Four persons: $50,000
Five persons: $52,500
More than five persons: $52,500 PLUS $2,500 for each additional person
You are NOT eligible for this FREE program if you:
—are self-employed
—have employment expenses, business or rental income or expenses, capital gains or losses
—have filed for bankruptcy; or,
—are completing a tax return for a deceased person.

- Sooke Fall Fair

Sooke Fall Fair is in transition as we move through the changes due to health concerns and safety. We will appreciate your help in volunteering to help us through a new and exciting way to carry through our fair. We appreciate your ingenuity and creativity your social and computer skills to help us to create an exciting new way to enjoy our fair.

Currently, they are looking for Vice-President and Directors, who will be responsible under the society act.
We also have some amazing volunteer opportunities for section head, for our animal, photography and flower sections

- Sooke Shelter Society
Sooke Shelter Society needs volunteers that can work two or more hours a week with their most vulnerable and unhoused population. People with mental health and addiction disorders.

We have a list of organizations looking for volunteers. Drop by our office, we would love to know what you would like to do as a volunteer, what skills you have and what your background is. We can refer you to a compatible organization in our region. It is easy and time-efficient. You can volunteer once, only during summertime or all year round. Volunteer Centre Updates

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, our office is closed to ALL VISITORS until further notice. We will continue to answer your emails and phone calls 250-642-6364 ext. 235 as often as possible. Most of our current programs are currently on hold. It includes our regular Better at Home NON-MEDICAL home services and Free Community Tax Program
Tax Program Updates:
You should file your income tax and benefit returns before June 1, 2020, to make sure that benefits are credits are not interrupted.
There are a few options you can consider to do it on time:
NETFILE: If you can access a computer, you can file online using CRA certified tax-filing software. There are a variety of software products to meet your needs, some of which are free
FILE MY RETURN: File my Return is a free, secure, and easy to use telephone service for eligible people with low income or a fixed income whose situations remain unchanged from year to year.
Those who are eligible have received an invitation letter in the regular mail or in their T1 income tax and benefit package. Number to call is 1-800-959-8281

Currently, we offer “Safe Seniors, Strong Communities” program that matches people who want to help seniors get the groceries and medications they need and stay socially connected through virtual visits with seniors in our local community. This program is funded by the government in partnership with bc211 and the Better at Home Program. Our local seniors get grocery shopping or check-in weekly to be sure they have support during this time of isolation. This program is more than just regular shopping. It is also an amazing opportunity to start a friendship. A dedicated volunteer is matched with a senior so they can learn more about each other and make a closer connection in this difficult time. We are still looking for seniors and volunteers to participate. Volunteer Centre Updates

Due to COVID-19, we are not running our regular office hours and our Free Tax Program is on hold until further notice. The Canadian Government has moved the deadline for tax returns to Jun 1 2020. When the situation is more stable we will open our office and Free Tax Program will be available again. If only you have any questions, please leave a message and we will call you back as soon as possible.
Sooke Region Volunteer Center is pleased to provide Sooke Region Better at Home Program. This program is designed to help our seniors with those simple day to day tasks, allowing them to continue to live independently and stay connected to our Community. Under this program, Seniors aged 65+, regardless of their household income, will have access to NON-MEDICAL home services, with affordable fees based on their yearly household income.

WHICH SERVICES ARE AVAILABLE IN OUR COMMUNITY?

Transportation, Light Housekeeping, Minor home repairs, Shopping, Yard work and Companion (some services might not be available yet)

WHO IS AVAILABLE FOR SENIOR SERVICES?

This program is open to ALL residents of Sooke Region (Sooke, East Sooke, Otter Point, Shirley and Jordan River) age 65+, regardless of income. Seniors will be asked to provide proof of age, residency and household income. Fees for service are based on yearly household income as shown on your annual Canada Revenue Agency Notice of Assessment.

HOW DO I APPLY FOR SERVICES?

By contacting Sooke Region Volunteer Center. We will make an appointment to visit you at your home to discuss your needs and how we can best provide the right services to meet them.

Our Sooke Region Volunteer Centre is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 12.30-4.30pm and on Wednesdays between 9.00-12.00 pm.
