October 2013

This conference put on by Volunteer BC was amazing!  The quality of the presenters and the quantity of the 'take-aways' was mind blowing!  After 19 hours of trying to absorbe all of that information, I now have the task of disseminating it into formats that the 180+ non-profit groups, clubs, organizations and charities in our region can utilize!  Not everbody will be ready for all of it though I believe there is something there for everyone.  Having lived and worked in this community for 40-odd years, I have some awareness of the needs in the community and information to take to specific gr

Many corporations have community engagement and employee volunteerism policies. The following company attended and presented at the 2013 Volunteer Futures Conference:

FortisBC - 100% Canadian owned, give $300/year + a volunteer to the organization of the employee’s choice, will top up any employee donation by 50%, give $30,000 donation plus an ‘army of volunteers’ to an annual project. Employees vote on the choice.  They also provide 3 employee ‘volunteer days’ per year and have an employee run foundation ‘Warm Hearts’

If you belong to a volunteer based organization and are struggling to find the volunteers you need, you may want to consider some of these points:

‘Volunteer’ is the pay category.  Do not put it first and don’t bother mentioning it in ‘Volunteer Opportunities Listings’.

Also, they are 'positions descriptions' not 'Job Descriptions'.  This also refers to the pay category, which is none in the case of volunteers.
